Letter From Our Winemaker

Greetings from Copain! The upcoming 2017 harvest will mark our first full year as part of Jackson Family Wines. I have heard from many of you since the acquisition, so I thought I would take the time to give you, Copain loyalists, an update as we embark on this new adventure and reassure you of my role with the family.

For my impending 19th harvest for Copain and into the future, l will continue to guide the creative direction of the winemaking from the vineyard sourcing to crafting the wines that end up in your glasses. My ability to stay in control of these processes was one of the many reasons Jackson Family Wines was appealing for this next chapter. The inspiration that lead me to create Copain has not waned and my motivated and focused attention to the wines will not be deterred. There is no intention on my part of walking away from what has been and will continue to be my life’s creative energy. The resources and support I have been provided will allow me to build upon what has been created and to take Copain to even greater heights. It is an endeavor I am excited to embrace as winemaker and ambassador for Copain Wines.

To that end, we have kept our key vineyard sources that have helped define Copain, while simultaneously adding some exciting new sources starting with the 2016 vintage and beyond. I was given the opportunity to explore the very best vineyard holdings within the family, selecting those which I was most enthusiastic about, and look at them through the Copain winemaking lens that has defined our style. I believe you’ll find the new wines to be complimentary additions to our portfolio. I am eager to share those wines as exciting expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the true Sonoma Coast, mountain tops of Alexander Valley and of course Anderson Valley.

My sole focus at Copain is to continue to craft expressive wines that speak of balance, varietal characteristics, vintage and of place. In this next chapter of Copain, all my energy is focused on managing our vineyards and making the best wines, without any other distractions.

Only time will tell, but if you have enjoyed Copain in the past, then trust me when I say that the best is yet to come!

Thank you for your continued support and belief in Copain.

A votre santé,

Wells Guthrie
