2011 Hawks Butte Syrah
Profoundly aromatic, the 2011 Hawks Butte Syrah captivates with copious fruit that compliments the violet floral accents. Whole cluster fermentation allows the wine to obtain structure from stem tannin instead of new oak, resulting in a lively, layered, and expressive wine with a broad palate and a soft velvet texture.
Perched on slopes 1,400 feet above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this Syrah vineyard is located just shy of the southeastern end of Anderson Valley. Cool nighttime temperatures and rocky soils, reminiscent of the northern Rhône Valley, render a truly site-specific wine bearing pronounced aromatics, blackberries and hints of spice.
Despite the challenges that 2011 brought to Yorkville Highlands, our wines from this vintage are some of the most elegant Wells has made, offering great tension and balance. A cool, rainy spring and summer delayed the growing season, while mid-September brought sun and 90 degree heat to the vineyards. We harvested this fruit during a brief window in October as the vineyards were drying out.
