This is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Mourvedre from the James Berry Vineyard in Paso Robles. The steep hillside vineyard with its limestone soil has produced a very pure and refreshing wine. As with the syrah and roussanne produced from this vineyard, the limestone soils inhibit potassium absorption into the fruit which raises the pH in the finished wine. This unique aspect allows us to have ripe flavors but keep them from being too sappy while balancing sound acidity. This soil profile is the same in Chateauneuf du Pape and allows those wines to be balanced even with elevated alcohol levels. We feel this finished wine represents the purity of the blending of these two varietals and is a testament to why they work so well together. The earthy, leathery nuances of mourvedre compliment the pure raspberry Grenache fruitthe perfect ying and yang. |
