2001 Tasting Notes

The Hein Vineyard thankfully had proper frost protection, though the outer rows on the highest portion of the vineyard did suffer some damage. Cluster weights were significantly lower and the vineyard yielded a modest 6.2 tons off 7 acres of five year old vines. We fermented 30% of the wine with whole clusters in a separate trial. This was then blended back into the final wine and we feel has added another dimension that the 2000 Hein did not possess: firmer structure, floral nuances and high toned notes. This wine will surely benefit from cellaring, though at present, it really exhibits great Hein characteristics of earthy richness after a few hours of being open. Enjoy! (225 cases produced)

Immediately after opening high toned notes of anise and rhubarb compliment the light talc and black cherry aromas. Rhubarb later gives way to beet root and wet earth. Aromas carry well to the palate picking up hints of toast and a sweet floral note. The finish is tightly structured with firm yet supple tannins and framed by sound acidity.
