2012 Kiser 'En Bas' Pinot Noir
With alluring depth and exceptional structure, the Kiser 'En Bas' Pinot Noir is a beautifully textured wine of remarkable complexity. Aromas of morello cherry, bergamot and juniper lead to densely layered flavors of red currant, toasted fennel seed and fresh apple. The broad palate is regal and refined, with a purity of fruit and earth which will continue to captivate, evolve and excite for many years to come.
Roughly ten miles from the ocean, the flagship Kiser Vineyard is located in the “Deep End” of Anderson Valley and is our coolest site, yielding small amounts of intensely flavored fruit. The vineyard has three distinctive blocks, each with different soils, and we bottle them separately as the wines are vastly different. Planted to dense, stony soils, the ‘En Bas’ is the lower portion of the vineyard.
The 2012 vintage was a welcome relief following the challenges of 2010 and 2011. A wet winter was balanced by a moderate, slightly dry spring, with bud break and veraison occurring several weeks later than usual. Bestowing optimal conditions for slow, even ripening, a long Indian summer extended into early October. Harvest commenced approximately two weeks later than previous years, and was condensed into a few short weeks, with all of our fruit in by November 1.
