Single Vineyard Wines

Coveted long before they are consumed, our Single Vineyard wines are as individual as the passionate wine drinkers that collect them. These wines each reflect a single moment in the life of a single vineyard - during which both the land and the fruit itself have been painstakingly cared for. While exquisite now, our Single Vineyard wines are crafted to be saved and savored years after their release. Due to limited size of production, these wines are first released to our Single Vineyard Members.

2013 Spring Single Vineyard Releases

2011 Brosseau Chardonnay - SOLD OUT

Located in the Chalone appellation that made history in the 1976 Paris Tasting,
Brosseau is Copain's most southern vineyard source. These old vines, reaping the
benefits of the cool marine influence, are planted in a particularly rocky mixture of
limestone and decomposed granite. Whole-cluster pressed into neutral oak barrels,
the mature Wente clones produce one of the most mineral-driven Chardonnays in
California.

Tasting Notes:
Another vibrant offering from the esteemed eponymous vineyard in the heart of the
Chalone appellation, the 2011 Brosseau Chardonnay shines with bright, opulent fruit
and cru Chablis character. Its supple, round texture and assertive acidity further enhance
its classic charm. 13.4% abv

2010 Kiser 'En Bas' Pinot Noir

Roughly ten miles from the ocean, the Kiser Vineyard is located in the "Deep End" of
Anderson Valley and is our coolest site, yielding small amounts of intensely flavored
fruit. The vineyard has two distinctive blocks, each with different soils, and we bottle
them separately as the wines are vastly different. Planted to dense, stony soils, the 'En
Bas' is the lower portion of the vineyard.

Tasting Notes:
With sumptuous fruit and exquisite structure, the 2010 Kiser 'En Bas' is a captivating
wine of stunning depth and complexity. Both lush and refined, this bottling boasts a
remarkable harmony and purity of fruit that will only continue to enhance, evolve, and
excite for many years to come. 12.4% abv

2010 Kiser 'En Haut' Pinot Noir

Perched 200 feet above the 'En Bas' parcel, the higher Kiser 'En Haut' possesses more
compressed sandstone than the lower block, and enjoys further depth from bands of
schist permeating the soil. The combination of the two components gives the wine heady
aromatics and notable minerality in both aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes:
The upper parcel of our flagship Kiser vineyard continues to yield some of our brightest
and most feminine fruit, and the 2010 Kiser 'En Haut' is another gorgeous example
with its grace, finesse, and consummate elegance. Soft, lovely, and nuanced, this is truly
deserving of its reputation as one of our most seductive and sought-after Pinots. 12.8% abv

2009 Hawks Butte Syrah

Perched 1,400 feet above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this Syrah vineyard
is located just shy of the southeastern end of Anderson Valley. The vines have struggled
to get a foothold in this feeble soil, but are now rendering a truly site-specific wine.

Tasting Notes:
As with all Copain Syrahs, Hawks Butte undergoes whole cluster fermentation and,
consequently, obtains its structure from stem tannins, not from new oak. Profoundly
aromatic, the 2009 Hawks Butte Syrah captivates with copious fruit which complements
the prevalent herbal and savory undertones. Its rich and remarkably broad palate belies its
light weight and soft, velvet texture. 13.9% abv

2009 Halcon Syrah

At 2,500 feet above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this is the highest
elevation vineyard in the Copain portfolio. The vines are planted directly into exposed
schist, which is so thick that very little topsoil is evident in the vine rows.

Tasting Notes:
The rocky, schist soils of this Yorkville Highlands vineyard reverberate through every
layer of the dynamic 2009 Halcon Syrah. Round and expressive, the vigorous dark fruit
and violet floral accents are abundant in this exceptionally balanced Syrah. 12.8% abv

2013 Fall Single Vineyard Releases

2011 Laureles Grade Chardonnay

Seven miles from the Pacific Coast and 1,250 feet in elevation on a ridge overlooking
Carmel Valley, the Laureles Grade parcel yields the highly-anticipated new Chardonnay
to the Copain portfolio. Meticulous farming, a unique microclimate, and calcareous
shale soils result in low yields of exceptionally high quality fruit from this picturesque
vineyard.

Tasting Notes:
The premiere vintage of our 2011 Laureles Grade Chardonnay showcases electrifying
fruit pulsing with lively acidity and astounding focus and clarity. The stony soils of
this plot, situated in Carmel Valley, are vividly expressed in this most beguiling and
Burgundian new Chardonnay from Wells Guthrie. 12.8% abv

2011 Monument Tree Pinot Noir

Named for a landmark redwood tree, the Monument Tree vineyard is planted with an
eastern sloping exposure, avoiding the late afternoon sun. The wine is a blend of clones
115 and 777, and soils are comprised of decomposed sandstone and loam that are starkly
expressed in the spicy fruit they yield.

Tasting Notes:
Coastal proximity and a lengthy ripening period result in deep, developed and
concentrated fruit, as the 2011 Monument Tree Pinot Noir proudly displays. As glorious
and commanding as the solitary sentinel redwood that gives the vineyard its name, the
Monument Tree is an absolute stunner with a round, silky palate and a long, lingering
finish. 13.5% abv

2011 Wentzel Pinot Noir

A cold climate Anderson Valley vineyard just outside the town of Philo, Wentzel's upper
block is planted to a variety of Dijon clones. It is from this block that we source our fruit.
The sandstone and rocky soils add a beautiful minerality to the wine, which was bottled
unfiltered.

Tasting Notes:
Enveloped by a wild wilderness, the fruit of this vineyard consistently echoes the woodsy
character of the tall pines that surround it. Briary fruit, forest floor and a robust, supple
spice dominate the 2011 Wentzel Pinot Noir, which marks an absolutely enchanting
vintage and welcome return for one of our most distinct Single Vineyard offerings. 13.2% abv

2009 Baker Ranch Syrah

Syrah is exceedingly hard to find in the Pinot Noir-centric Anderson Valley, though
Baker Ranch dared to plant it, and it delivers with flying colors. Organically farmed and
wonderfully expressive, this wine proves a most welcome and unique addition to the
Copain Syrah portfolio.

Tasting Notes:
Evocative of Northern Rhone and exceptionally terroir-driven, the 2009 Baker Ranch
Syrah intrigues and enthralls with its exotic spice and earthy, carnal core. Firm, yet
delicate, our singular Anderson Valley Syrah promises unlimited rewards to those with
the patience to cellar this wine for several years. 13.6% abv

2009 Brosseau Syrah

Located in the Chalone appellation and a short distance from the Pinnacles National
Monument, this vineyard is planted in granite and limestone, and produces a wine that
truly evokes its provenance. We would suggest decanting this wine if drinking young,
though it will develop exceptionally well in your cellar for 12-15 years.

Tasting Notes:
The 2009 Brosseau Syrah is one of the most unique and coveted within the Copain
portfolio. Racy minerality and alluring herbaceous notes play perfectly alongside the
wild black fruit, both rustic and restrained. The gentle grip of the well-integrated tannins
provides a solid backbone to this mature and resplendent red. 14.0% abv
