92 Points, Antonio Galloni, May 2019
High Rock Ranch is located at 1200' elevation, and the vines are planted in a melange of rocky soils. This is one of our most outstanding Syrahs with savory aromatics complimenting graphite and blackberry flavors on the palate.
The 2017 vintage began with significant rainfall prior to bloom, refilling the state’s reservoirs and ending California’s five-year drought. We saw a sudden spike in temperatures just prior to harvest, leading fruit to ripen quicker than anticipated. This sped up our harvest schedule, but due to our team’s vigilance, the fruit was still able to be picked at optimal ripeness. Temperatures then cooled back down by mid-September, allowing the remaining vineyards to complete ripening at an ideal pace. The rest of harvest was finished as planned, with yields coming in at their typical levels.
High Rock Ranch rests 19 miles from the Pacific coast and is in a unique geological area known as the “Yorkville Schist”. The soil is like the steep hillsides in Northern Rhone Valley in Southern France. High Rock Ranch is planted at 1200 feet above sea level and is a close neighbor of another vineyard we work with: Hawks Butte. The southwest aspect of the vineyard allows the vines to enjoy warm afternoon suns with occasional cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean.
Aromas: Pronounced black olive, dried cherries, crushed rock
Palate: Blueberry, dried chorizo, peppercorn
