2011 Halcon Syrah
Reverberating through every layer of the 2011 Halcon Syrah are the rocky, schist soils of this Yorkville Highlands vineyard. Dynamic and woodsy, this expressive Syrah displays vigorous dark fruit and an alluring Alpine quality. The tannic structure and brawny backbone promise further rewards to those with the patience to cellar this wine
At 2,500 feet above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this is the highest elevation vineyard in the Copain portfolio. The vines are planted directly into exposed schist, which is so thick that very little topsoil is evident in the vine rows.
Despite the challenges that 2011 brought to Yorkville Highlands, our wines from this vintage are some of the most elegant Wells has made, offering great tension and balance. A cool, rainy spring and summer delayed the growing season, while mid-September brought sun and 90 degree heat to the vineyards. We harvested this fruit during a brief window in October as the vineyards were drying out.
